I never intended to write this book, but after a long and hard fought six -year campaign to get the former Anglican Holy Trinity church site, it seemed it was a story worth telling. The site was first recommended for listing in the late 1990s, but years of resistance from the Church and its supporters on the local council got in the way.
The site holds a little ‘Carpenter-Gothic’ Cyril Blacket church building, many old growth trees and many unmarked graves – just how many is not known. This was the unofficial village burial ground well before the Anglicans were granted the land. And before the settlement of Huskisson (Kurrumbin), who knows. There are some written records – including of the burial of the sailor who had a heart attack out in Jervis Bay and most significantly, of James Golding (King Budd Billy, King of Jarvis Bay)
Apart from the undoubted heritage significance of the site, this is a story of a fabulous local community who just didn’t give up.
